Why Learn Greek?

For any serious language study you need a few things. You need either some good text books or a good teacher. You need dedication. And you also need a desire or a reason to learn the language.

So why Greek? Specifically Koine. Koine was the common dialect of Greek back in the first century AD. It was the language that was understood by the common people. So this was the language that the New Testament was written in.

For me, at least, the desire to learn Greek stems from a desire to understand the Bible better. That and there is just something mysterious and cool about the language to me.

Languages fascinate me. If I had the time, energy, and dedication I would want to learn Greek, Hebrew, Latin, and Russian. I think those languages are so important in the Biblical world and in the development of our culture.

Anyway, I'm getting off-topic perhaps. Understanding Greek gives us a better knowledge of the Scriptures and draws us closer to God and His Message of why He sent His Son to Earth. In the Greek we are able to pick up on some of the nuances of the NT and gain a deeper understanding of the Scriptures.

My textbooks

As mentioned before, I will be using two books for this journey. I used one in school, and the other is considered a classic text.

The first book, that I used before, is Essentials of New Testament Greek, by Ray Summer.

The second book is Basics of Biblical Greek, by William Mounce.

Not quite sure yet how I'll present the info, but I'll play around with the format. Anyway, those are my books.

See you next time when we dive into the language!

Intro

Hello, and welcome.

This is my new home of where I will be sharing my journey of learning Koine Greek. I will post things I learn, interesting thoughts, links, basically anything relating to my journey down this path.

To start, I did take some Greek in college. And yes, it was in NT Greek, aka Koine Greek. But it has been a while since then, so I will start back at the beginning.

I have two text books that I will be using. I will post the names and info from those books next time for anyone who is interested in joining on this journey.

If you happen upon this blog and it sounds interesting, let me know. I would love to have some fellow travelers on this path.
